How to Write Meta Descriptions That Get Clicks

Your meta description is the short snippet of text that appears beneath your page title in Google search results. While it’s not a direct ranking factor, a well-crafted meta description can be the difference between someone clicking your result or scrolling past it.

What Makes a Great Meta Description?

The best meta descriptions are between 150–160 characters long, include your target keyword naturally, and contain a clear call-to-action that tells the reader exactly what they’ll get by clicking through.

Include Your Target Keyword

When a user’s search query matches words in your meta description, Google bolds those terms in the snippet. This visual emphasis makes your result stand out on the page and signals to the user that your content is relevant to their search.

Write for the User, Not the Algorithm

Think about what would motivate your ideal visitor to click. Are you solving a problem? Revealing a secret? Offering a free resource? Your meta description should lead with the benefit and create a sense of urgency or curiosity.

Avoid Duplicate Meta Descriptions

Every page on your site should have a unique meta description. Duplicate descriptions confuse search engines and reduce the impact of each individual page in search results.
